Questions and Answers
What is Thai Boxing (Muay Thai)?

Thai boxing is approx three thousand years old it was devised by the people of Siam (now Thailand) as a fighting art. Back then its main use was in confrontation with the neighbouring Burmese as these two countries were often at war.

Thai boxing consists of punching, kicking, knees, elbows, clinch work and take downs. It is considered by many to be one of, if not the most devastating form of stand up unarmed combat styles.

These days Thai boxing is a big martial art/sport through out the world. Its popularity has spread all over the world and from it was born kick boxing in the early seventies, devised by American and Japanese practitioners taking out the knees elbows and kicking above the waist. There are many styles deriving from the essence of Thai boxing however Thai boxing (Muay Thai) is still considered number one.

Who trains in Thai Boxing?

Simple answer is everyone. The classes are both for male and female and surprisingly its near enough fifty fifty! Age wise the club takes on students from the age of twelve and there is no upper age limit. Don't worry about your level of fitness, over a short space of time you will notice your fitness increase and a general feeling of well being. Please however do talk to your instructor prior to training if you have any medical conditions eg back/shoulder, asthma etc.

The beginner's class on Tuesday evening concentrates on technique and does not push fitness too much, the emphasis is getting things right.Talk to your instructor on what you want from your training. Remember you take what you want. If you want to be worked a little harder just ask. This class is quite light hearted and you will learn at a level and pace suitable to your requirements. This class last one hour.

The regular classes work a lot of fitness and conditioning. A typical class will consist of warm up, stretching, shadow boxing, pad work, ring craft, sparring not forgetting the all important warm down stretch at the end. These are geared to develop your basic skill to higher levels these classes last one and a half hours.

Why train in Thai Boxing?

People train in Thai boxing for many different reasons,it could be for fitness, flexibility, conditioning, self defence, stress relief, weight loss, gradings and or competition.

The thing is you decide what you want, no pressure to do any thing you don't want to do! Very few people actually compete (they may be skilled enough and good enough but for what ever reason choose not to compete). Thats fine after all its your call.

What To Wear?

Beginners are advised to wear training bottoms but ideally shorts as they are less resrictive and you wont get to hot, on top wear a regular tee shirt (nothing offensive) however its wise to put a sweatshirt as well especially in winter (you can take it off when you warm up). We train bare foot but if there are any medical reasons you need to wear trainers then speak to your instructor. Ideally bring a bottle of water.

Once you have been with us a little while and you are a member (see Membership Page) you can buy the club kit and colours (shorts, tee shirt etc). Although there are a few pairs of visitor bagloves for beginners to use, it is strongly recommended the first thing you purchase are a pair of your own bag gloves and or hand wraps, these are available from Ian.

What about Competition?

There are various levels of competition available from light inter-club for students wishing to gain ring experience before going on to full contact, or again that is the level they wish to stay and compete in.

There is full contact and this is for students who put in one hundred percent into their training fitness and conditioning. It is vital they have a burning desire to want to compete at this level and stick to the grueling training regime necessary. (Only five percent of students compete at this level).

I already train in another Martial Art?

As long as your current instructor does not mind then you are more than welcome. Please do run it past you instructor if you are serious about your current style.

I am on Holiday?
