| About Us |
IntroductionHello my name is Ian Davies I am chief instructor here at Falmouth Thai Boxing Club, here's a bit of info about us:
Falmouth Thai boxing club started in 1993. In the early years we were based in the Fit Pit gym (now Club Health) in Falmouth in the town centre. Back in 2002 the club moved to its present location at Western Terrace.
The main and core style of the club is Muay Thai (Thai Boxing). Thai Boxing can be superb for fitness, flexability, confidence building, self protection as well as giving students oportunity to compete in the ring at either semi contact or full contact level.(more specifics can be found on the 'FAQ' page of this site)
We also teach MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and although this isn't our main area there are huge benefits in learning how to survive on the ground and utilise effective techniques from various arts. No matter how good you are on your feet if you end up on the ground it can really put a spanner in the works as I found out.
I discovered MMA about six years ago after a training session with a very good local friend. I was at the gym on the mats back to back with him and was not really to worried about having a 'roll' with him. Within seconds I was tapping out (tapping the partner or mat to say basically your out of options and finished) second time around I thought I would try harder, within thirty seconds I was tapping again, and so this repetitive cycle went on for half hour or so. Now this was a huge reality check, a wake up call. I had to get my head into this stuff and my friend also being a gifted coach and technician started enlightening me on the ground game. Thats where the MMA training started.
Kim Phillips is a superb MMA instructor at the gym (1st dan Ju Jitsu). kim has superb grappling skills/teaching skills and also competes on the MMA scene.
I also teach realistic Self protection/Self defence and on this subject I never sell people short (Please do take your personal safety serious, don't fall for a lot of the nonsense which is currently taught out there). I teach various aspects regarding self protection. A huge part of self protection is not getting into the situation in the first place, using your awareness, spotting warning/danger signs, escape, avoidance etc . For more information please visit the 'Self Protection' page.
On finishing let me say you will definitely be given a warm welcome if you come and train with us at Falmouth Thai. We welcome other martial artist's of all levels as we all learn off each other.
Safety is paramount in my teaching and a good warm up, stretch and warmdown is a part of every class. The training will be hard in the regular classes (and a lot easier in the beginner's class) but you will certainly reap the benefits and there is no intimidation or inflated egos. Its vital to me that new students don't feel at all intimidated and feel as relaxed as possible. I make a point of getting my senior students to interact with all levels so people soon get to know each other.
